Smile

by Ishmail Kamara

“Sometimes / in the twenty-first century / while I was weak and thirsty / I couldn’t speak my own language // I could see but I was blind / roaming the streets / of a green desert city / seeking God’s face / but hard to find // Some other day / in the twenty-first century / I met an angel ….” (The Rich Man’s Empty Closet)

Smile is Ishmail Kamara’s first collection.

Revolutionary Dreams: From Chile to Wales

by José Cifuentes

José Cifuentes and his partner, as student activists, worked to help poor people improve their lives. But a military coup on 11 September 1973, supported by the USA, put an end to ordinary Chileans’ hopes for a fairer society. The brutal dictatorship of General Pinochet hunted down all opposition. This is José’s story, in his own words.

Revolutionary Dreams is also available for purchase in Catalan and Spanish.

About José

José Cifuentes grew up in Chile and came of age when the popular socialist President Allende came to power, inspiring young people to dream of a fairer world. Then came the brutal military coup led by General Pinochet. He and María Cristina worked for the Committee for Peace and the Vicarage of Solidarity, organisations which documented human rights abuses and supported victims’ families. When the danger grew too great, in 1977 they and their baby daughter Rocío were lucky to find sanctuary abroad … in Wales.

Asylum

by Eric Ngalle Charles

ASYLUM is a documentary drama based on the stories of asylum seekers in Wales. We have seen the boat images, the dead mothers and fathers, the children dying face down in the water.

But what happens when someone makes it to the UK? Many asylum seekers suffer from severe mental health problems. Many have contemplated suicide, many live a ghostlike existence. Many are destitute. Those who have the misfortune of not having their story believed by the Home Office, which is more often than not, rely on miniscule help from charities, and the kindness of strangers.

Y Sidydd / Zodiac

by Rhys Trimble, Euros Bowen

Revolutionary poet and priest Euros Bowen was to Welsh literature what T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound were to English: he connected Welsh writing with international Modernism.

Bowen’s sequence of 12 Sacramentalist or shamanic poems on the Zodiac, published in Welsh in 1961, has been rediscovered by neo-Bardic poet Rhys Trimble

The Welsh poems are reprinted here alongside Trimble’s electric, experimental English versions.

Afterword by Elan Grug Muse.
